The Karnatic Festival was an evening on which a whole bunch of very nice new pieces were presented. I had the pleasure to participate as a player on a piece by Marta Golka and also to present the world my new piece: unrelatable. I worked hard on unrelatable. I wanted to make a piece on which every musician could build its own score, at the same time that some karnatic indications were followed and that we created an improvisation together.
The final result impressed me so much, and it seems the audience love it too!
I'm so grateful to the musicians that joined that crazy ride: Nassim López-Palacios (drums), Silvia Gallego (double-bass) and Bea Álvarez (viola). They, as much as I did, composed that piece too.
Program notes:
How can we be sure what is the truth anymore if we can only access to what we are told?
Should we keep following the instructions? Or do we still have enough space to make our own score, which speaks to us directly?
'Unrelatable' is a reflection of our unintillegible, full of contradictions situation which wants to open a door to self-expression. Intermingled gati and jati structures and various harmonic modes simulate the laws over which all players are encouraged to make the script their own and find collectively a volatile, organic and trully common ground.
